Notes for parents and teachers
Maths is a way that we make sense of the world around us. For the young child, this includes
recognizing similarities and differences, classifying objects, recognizing shapes and patterns,
developing number sense, and using simple measurement skills.
Before reading
Connect with what children know
Discuss types of transport and identify that one way we can travel is by aeroplane.Allow
children to share any experiences they have had at the airport and on an aeroplane and
encourage them to name as many workers as they can.
After reading
Build upon children’s curiosity and desire to explore
•With children, look at the photos of the cockpit and discuss how pilots use different instruments
of measurement. Some children will be interested to learn that an altimeter tells the distance the
plane is off the ground and an airspeed indicator tells the pilot how fast they are flying through
the air.
•In the gym or on the playground, demonstrate the importance of an air traffic controller by having
one child be an “air traffic controller” while other children wait for directions to “take off”. First have
the controller count to 10 between telling individual children to “take off” (walking a single line).
Discuss how the distance between “planes” changes depending
on when the controller tells them to take off.

classroom demonstraons and coaching.
The Maths at Work series examines how people around the
world use common basic maths skills in their jobs. This book
looks at maths at the airport, and includes chapters on counting,
measuring, shape and size, and time. The final page of each
chapter ends with a simple maths question for the reader,
so they can put their own maths skills into practice.
